Starring: Sam Worthington, Anthony Hopkins, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten. Director: Daniel Alfredson. Released: March 6, 2. U. S. Dates)Chronicles the planning, execution, and aftermath of the 1. Dutch beer magnate Freddy Heineken (Hopkins), one of the richest men in the world, and his driver.
Which included the largest ransom ever paid for an individual (equivalent to $5. It’s based on the book by an investigative reporter who became involved in tracking down the four men gang (who were childhood friends). The Swedish director of . It’s a familiar heist- thriller that’s solid but never captivating.
The characters are thin, and it dips whenever Hopkins isn’t on screen, but it does a decent job with authenticity. Cut Bank. Starring: Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton, John Malkovich, Teresa Palmer. Director: Matt Shakman. Released: April 3, 2. Dwayne (Hemsworth) dreams about escaping small town life in Cut Bank, Montana, with his vivacious girlfriend (Palmer). When he witnesses an awful crime, he tries to leverage the bad situation into a scheme to get rich quickly but finds that fate and an unruly accomplice are working against him.
Thrust into the middle of a police investigation spearheaded by the local sheriff (Malkovich), and hunted by a stuttering murderer in thick glasses, everything goes from bad to worse. From the writer of TV’s . Indeed it’s heavily influenced by the Coen brothers’ country noir, almost to the point of distraction. The great cast deserved a brainer, ballsier script, but it’s worth a look. Project Almanac. Starring: Jonny Weston, Sofia Black D’Elia, Sam Lerner, Allen Evangelista. Director: Dean Israelite.
Released: January 3. When a handsome high- school geek and his friends find his deceased father’s plans for a time machine, they build it and travel back together for short periods to get rich, get popular and enact revenge on school bullies. But when the geek uses it repeatedly on his own to secure the girl of his dreams, the resulting ripple effect leads to (off- screen) catastrophes. Will he reset everything, and lose her love, to undo the damage? When a young girl moves in with her grandparents nearby, her attempts to befriend the boy at the window are met with vehement resistance by his controlling parents.
Until one day she is forced to hide in the house and discovers the cellar. In many respects it’s . Two serious plot flaws (not calling the police, the age of the boy) undermine it, and it never quite peaks with the full- on chaos and mayhem you’re hoping for, but the performance of Samantha Morton as the unstable, domineering mother is so good it makes it worthwhile. Acting and writing elsewhere are solid with Michael Shannon watchable though slightly miscast as the meek husband. Self/less. Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Ben Kingsley, Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery. Director: Tarsem Singh. Released: July 3.
A billionaire dying from cancer (Kingsley) undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of an empty “vessel”, a healthy young man (Reynolds). But this immortality is not it seems, as he starts to discover the vessel had a life of his own before being abducted to the lab.
As he struggles with letting the old personality retake the body, the medical organisation (headed by Goode) starts killing to protect its interests. It shares something with . Undoubtedly Kingsley’s opening 1. Reynolds’ fairly standard man on the run, though they both commit to their performances.
When Kingsley’s brain is printed into Reynolds’ body the film fails to ever really give the sense that they are the same person (transforming instantly from cold- blooded capitalist to decent human being), it would have been nice to see old man skills, attitude and decades of business savvy in the body of a young person – An old man, given a young body, and a rage against injustice would have been terrific, and while there are shades of that, it’s an opportunity missed. Cop Car. Starring: Kevin Bacon, Hays Wellford, James Freedson- Jackson, Shea Whigham.
Director: Jon Watts. Released: August 7, 2. When two 1. 0- year- olds find an abandoned cop car in the fields, their curiosity leads to a joyride that takes them far away. But when the sheriff (Bacon) returns, fresh from burying a body in the woods, and realises not only are his automatic guns still in the car but another body in the boot, the naive boys better hope he doesn’t catch up with them.
The script is efficient and takes its oddly intriguing premise to interesting places, but it never catches fire and really thrills with heart- stopping excitement. The cast give great performances, be it the kids (who are actually written for their age, which is rare), or the very flustered Kevin Bacon. With black humour and a combination of desperate villains and naive small- towners against vast empty scenary, it’s channelling the work of the Coen brothers. Soaked In Bleach (2015) Video Download.
