CBS has ordered eight new shows for next season, split evenly between comedies and dramas. In an ambitious move, the network will attempt to launch six of those newcomers this fall, despite once again interrupting its schedule for Thursday Night Football (which will delay the launches of several shows until November).

Those new shows will also force CBS to hold back several returning programs, including Man With a Plan and Elementary, to midseason. Overall, even with so many new pieces, the overall schedule structure remains the same, with comedies on Monday and Thursday nights, and some nights (Tuesday, Friday) completely untouched. Network executives have already found themselves on the defensive (much like they were last year after introducing TV's seemingly least- diverse slate) for its male- dominated lineup of new programs (and correspondingly passing on every one of its female- centric pilots).
All five of the network's 2. CBS has added two episodes to the delayed first season of Star Trek: Discovery, and has also ordered a Talking Trek after- show. The 1. 5- episode first season is expected to finally debut this fall (and will still be a CBS All Access exclusive beginning with the 2nd episode). This year's casualties included a decent chunk of the network's comedy lineup, including veteran shows 2 Broke Girls (a bit of a surprise, though likely a business decision, since it comes from an outside production company) and The Odd Couple. This relatively self- explanatory military procedural from Benjamin Cavell (Justified, Homeland, Sneaky Pete) focuses on a group of elite Navy SEALS during training, planning, and execution of high- stakes clandestine missions. The good news is that this new series comes from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan (along with CSI: NY and Southland writer Aaron Rahsaan Thomas), while Justin Lin (Fast Five) directs the pilot and also serves as a producer. Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) heads a cast that also includes Alex Russell, Jay Harrington, Stephanie Sigman, and Kenny Johnson.

TV's Jeremy Piven stars in this adaptation of an Israeli series as a Bay Area tech innovator who creates a cutting- edge crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter's murder, and finds out that it can be used to solve other crimes as well. Jones also star. High- tech procedurals have been popular in recent years (with APB and Pure Genius last season, and NBC's new Reverie set for next season) but they haven't been lasting very long. Ordered to series back in March, this spinoff from The Big Bang Theory centers on that show's Sheldon Cooper back when he was a 9- year- old child attending high school (not a typo) in East Texas.
You obviously won't see Jim Parsons (who plays Cooper in the original series) in the prequel—Iain Armitage (Big Little Lies) plays the youngster—but you will hear him narrating the series. Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro are among the producers, and Jon Favreau directs the opener, which will get a one- time Monday night September premiere (after The Big Bang Theory) before resurfacing in November on Thursdays.
